Powderham Castle is a beautiful fortified manor house near Exeter, Devon. Owned by the Courtenay family, and with over 600 years of heritage, there is lots to see, learn and enjoy for all ages.
Accepting visitors since 1957, the castle provides guided tours that take you through the majestic rooms, winding staircases, and secret nooks. There are two tours available:- the State Room Tour takes you through the gardens, grange, and the most significant and grand rooms of the castle; whereas the Upstairs/Downstairs Tour shows you a different side of Powderham, it’s purpose as a family home for the Courtenay family and staff, and takes you to the family bedrooms and private areas, with personal stories and insights.
The castle lies in a picturesque deer park on the banks of the River Exe, and there are several gardens in Powderham to explore with their own unique identity. The American Garden is a secluded are with exotic trees and a gothic summerhouse. The Rose Garden and Chapel have beautiful blooms growing from June onwards, with Wisteria hanging from the east facing terrace. The Walled Garden has a victorian glasshouse, play area and pets corner, which is very popular with the children.
For food, The Courtenay Café offers a range of light lunches, refreshments and delicious cream teas, as well as vegetarian options.
